How to Care for Timber Joinery

Protecting Your Wooden Windows & Doors for Years to Come

Timber joinery adds warmth, beauty, and character to your home — but like all natural products, it needs a bit of care to stay in top shape.

With the right maintenance, timber doors, windows, and frames can last decades, performing beautifully while standing up to New Zealand’s tough weather conditions.

Here’s everything you need to know about caring for your timber joinery.

Why Maintenance Matters

Timber is a natural, breathable material that expands, contracts, and reacts to moisture and sun exposure. Without proper care, timber joinery can be affected by:

  • Swelling or shrinking
  • Paint or stain breakdown
  • Mould, mildew, or rot
  • Cracked glazing putty
  • Sticking or jamming windows and doors

Good maintenance = long life, great looks, and minimal issues.

Timber Joinery Care Checklist

1. Regular Cleaning

Gently clean timber joinery every 3–6 months:

  • Use a mild detergent and soft cloth or sponge
  • Avoid harsh abrasives or pressure washers
  • Rinse off dust, grime, salt spray (especially near the coast)

Tip: Clean when you wash your windows — two birds, one stone.

2. Keep Paint and Stain in Good Condition

Check for:

  • Flaking paint
  • Faded stain
  • Bare timber exposed to sun or rain

Repaint or re-stain every 2–5 years, depending on exposure. Use high-quality exterior-grade paint or oil and follow the correct prep process.

Paint is more than looks — it’s protection.

3. Inspect Joints, Seals & Putty

Check:

  • Seals around glass and frames
  • Glazing putty
  • Timber joints and mitres

Replace cracked or missing sealant, and re-putty glass panes as needed. This keeps water out and stops movement-related cracks.

4. Lubricate Hardware

Use silicone spray or a light lubricant on:

  • Hinges
  • Latches
  • Sliding tracks
  • Locks and handles

Keep everything moving smoothly and rust-free.

5. Manage Moisture

Make sure:

  • Downpipes and gutters aren’t overflowing
  • Joinery isn’t constantly exposed to pooling water
  • Indoor humidity is managed (especially in bathrooms and kitchens)

Consider adding awnings or eaves above exposed joinery for long-term protection.
