How Long Does It Take to Build a House?

Realistic timeframes for a new home build in the Waikato.

New build timeline

Most new homes take somewhere from six months to a year-plus from breaking ground to handover — and that's after design and consent, which add a few months on top. A plan-based home is faster than a one-off custom design.

The stages

  • Design: a few weeks to a few months (faster if you start from a plan)
  • Consent: typically around 20 working days at council once lodged, plus prep
  • Construction: commonly 6–12 months depending on size and complexity
