FAQ
What Renovations Need Consent in NZ?
Which renovation projects need building consent — and which don't.

Most homeowners are surprised by what does and doesn't need consent. As a rule of thumb: if it affects the structure, weathertightness, plumbing or drainage, assume it needs consent — and if it's purely cosmetic, it often doesn't.
Renovations that usually need consent
- Removing or altering load-bearing walls to open up a space
- Adding a room, a second storey or extending out
- Moving a kitchen or bathroom to a new location (new plumbing runs)
- Recladding or major weathertightness repairs
- Adding a wood burner or fireplace
Renovations that are often exempt
- Replacing a kitchen or bathroom in the same spot
- New flooring, painting and cosmetic updates
- Like-for-like repairs
