How to Choose a Builder in NZ
What to look for — and what to avoid — when hiring a builder.

Choosing the right builder is the single biggest decision in any project. Get it right and the whole thing is smoother, tidier and less stressful. Here's what to look for.
Your checklist
- Are they a Licensed Building Practitioner (LBP)? Check the public register
- Are they a member of a recognised body like New Zealand Certified Builders (NZCB)?
- Do they offer a guarantee — like the Halo 10-Year Residential Guarantee?
- Will they give you a clear, written, itemised quote?
- Can they show you past work and put you in touch with references?
- Do they communicate well from the very first contact?
Red flags
- Cash-only or pressure to skip a contract
- Vague quotes with big 'allowances' and no detail
- No licensing or membership you can verify
- Poor communication before you've even signed — it won't improve later
